Antique Roses
An antique rose is generally considered any variety introduced into the nursery trade prior to 1867. We use the term in a less restrictive way and include later introductions that are in keeping with many of the traits of the heirloom varieties. We even include a few early hybrid teas as well as species roses in our collection.
The plants collected by our twenty odd years of interest are displayed at our nursery and cuttings are taken all year from these plants. The five hundred Albaro mother plants are used in the landscape and integrated into garden settings among cottage garden favorites such as perennials, ornamental grasses, clematis, shrubs, vines and ground covers. A beautiful garden is created by combining the reblooming modern varieties along with antique roses. Many species and antique roses have traits that extend well beyond their flowers. Striking foliage or colorful hips will enhance any garden for a long period.
Many varieties of antique roses rebloom throughout the spring and summer. Others have a huge flush of flowers in the spring that can completely cover the foliage and will bloom occasionally throughout the year. Some have a striking fall display of flowers and others may bloom once in the spring or summer and have a fall display of bright red, orange or maroon hips. The flower arranger is delighted by this diversity of color and shape.
In the list of roses, each variety is designated with a class that can provide a hint of the various traits. We have described these general traits under the section “Rose Classes” and the size, shape, bloom and fragrance characteristics can be researched in this section.
